Born in Scituate on 3/1/1732, William Cushing was the first appointee to the US Supreme Court. In 1783, he ruled in the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts that “all men are born free and equal” in the state bill of rights implicitly abolishing slavery in Massachusetts. He was appointed to the US Supreme Court in 1789 by President George Washington.
