The Scituate Visitors Center is a not-for-profit organization, founded under the leadership of longtime community leader Sue DiPesa. After a successful “Scituate Loves Local” initiative to promote local business during the pandemic, a group of interested and talented citizens was formed to explore the concept of a virtual visitor’s center.
Today, people use their phone, iPad, tablet, and computers as sources of information to plan itineraries, reserve hotels, entrance tickets, make dinner reservations, and to receive thoughtful suggestions and reviews from fellow travelers. Often it is the first and last place visitors check. The Scituate Visitors Center website is designed to beckon, inform and assist visitors while a “brick and mortar” presence is being explored.
The committee was inspired by the original effort led by the late and beloved Susan Phippen. Susan worked tirelessly with a dedicated group to establish a Visitors Center a decade or more ago at the WPA building in North Scituate. Empowered by their work, the Economic Development Commission formed a subcommittee in the Fall of 2020 to explore the feasibility, the funding opportunities, and the benefits to the community. Once it was determined that the project was viable and the time was right then the Scituate Visitors Center received nonprofit status as a 501(c)3. This board and committee have worked to ensure that the Scituate Visitors Center became a reality.
We are forever grateful to the late Susan Phippen for her dedication to the town of Scituate and her vision for its future.
