Traditionally the month of Thanksgiving, November is also the time to count our blessings. We in Scituate are fortunate to have so many established groups doing good work on our behalf. Whatever your cause or charitable interest, you can find the perfect match right here. Supporting our charities is not limited to money – though money gifts are very important. Of course, there are many substitutes for monetary donations, here are a few examples:
First, you can volunteer your time and skills to organize, perform clerical tasks, prepare for or clean up after an event. Host a fundraiser – this doesn’t have to be a fancy ballroom type function- a cookout or wine and cheese party or a “pot luck block party” to benefit a charity would help. Multiply that by 10, 20, 30 and the contributions become very significant.
Giving lessons is a fabulous way to share your talent. Many people would love private lessons: dancing, singing, knitting, sewing, cooking, baking, painting. The potential is endless.
Or, an exciting alternative is to raise money while you get some fresh air. Hold a walk-a-thon on some of Scituate’s beautiful trails. Gardeners might barter an hour of weeding, edging, trimming or raking. Teens can shovel driveways and walkways, donating time helping neighbors for a donation to one of Scituate’s charities.
Check your closets while fall cleaning. Gently used clothes may be just what is needed for people entering the job market. Check with the animal shelter to see if they can use some towels or whether they might need dog walkers.
Don’t let this Thanksgiving month pass without giving your thanks in a tangible way. It is the Scituate thing to do. Thank you!
