Local Catch 143 is pleased to offer a screening and discussion of the award-winning documentary, Fish & Men, on May 1st at 6:00pm at The Reel Theater in Scituate Harbor. Fishing is “…part of the soul of Scituate” according to Board Member Frank Mirachi who is featured in the documentary.
The Local Catch 143 story began with a deep concern for the declining worth of locally caught fish and the challenges faced by the commercial fishing community. Witnessing the struggle and recognizing a disconnect between South Shore consumers and their abundant seafood options, the founders knew that a change was essential.
Driven by the conviction that everyone should have access to fresh, sustainably sourced seafood, a group of concerned community members established a 501c3 non-profit organization known as Local Catch 143. The group works to ensure that locally caught fish remains accessible and affordable for all. Through a variety of activities including education, partnerships, advocacy and, soon, seafood traceability, Local Catch 143 believes in revitalizing the worth of these catches, cherishing their superior taste and quality. Please join the movement by attending their event on May 1st in Scituate.
Filmmaker Darby Duffin has Scituate roots and was inspired to make the documentary years ago after speaking to the wife of a local fisherman. “I think it’s something inherently important to realize that someone went out to the ocean and caught that fish you’re eating. It’s the last wild-caught food in the world, and there’s a lot to it. It’s such a noble profession.” But the United States, with thousands of miles of coastline and hundreds of years of fishing tradition, imports 91 percent of its seafood, Duffin said. “People assume that if they’re in a coastal community, the seafood is locally caught,” he said. “Often, that is not the case.” (From Ledger article linked below)
A talk back will follow the film, with members of the South Shore fishing community on hand to answer questions from the audience. Panelists include Joby Norton of Mullaney’s Harborside, Kevin Norton, Captain of the MV Miss Emily, and Jamie Patterson.
